Direct Zip Driver is a very versatile application. It is basically a file manager, but it is also capable of compressing files and creating virtual drives.

The application’s interface is quite easy to use. The developers have adhered to the traditional design of a file manager, a wise decision that saves time and efforts to the users. In fact, it would look very much alike Windows File Manager, if it were not for the toolbar. Most of the buttons there are related to performing archiving functions, such as compressing and extracting files. You can also configure compression settings; it allows selecting one among various popular formats, such as ZIP, RAR, 7Zip, ISO, CAB and GZ. You can also decide to split the file into a number of compressed files according to a definite file size or protect the archived contents with a password.

However, most of the options above are also available in other popular archivers, like WinRar, 7Zip and WinZip. What I find particularly different about this software is its capacity to map archives as virtual folders or virtual disks. In this respect, DirectZip can let you browse ISO or HDD images right from the file.

DirectZip perfectly integrates with Windows. It is not only accessible through the application’s shortcut but can also be run from the command prompt specifying compression parameters. Moreover, Windows File Manager includes DirectZip options in the file and folder contextual menus.
