WinX iMovie Video Converter for Mac - Free Edition was designed to help you convert video files so that you can import them into iMovie. Like everything Apple makes, iMovie only plays nice with a few formats (H.264, MPEG-4, MOV, etc). But you may have video files encoded using different formats. With this tool, you can convert these files to the formats supported by iMovie.
The graphical user interface is identical to converter by WinX for Windows. I am not a fan of this particular interface, but it is functional and this is a free app, so I can't complain much. In the middle of the screen, you will find three buttons "To MP4", "To MOV" and "To Music". They help you select and customize the output settings. Both the MP4 and MOV tabs will use the MPEG-4 codec to encode your video, and AAC for your audio. If you want to convert your video files using the "To Music" tab, you will only be able to convert them into MP3.
In my testing, I converted a 720p MKV file into MP4 with no problems at all. The file was 1-minute long and the process took exactly that time. That isn't very fast though.
