Windows Surface Scanner is a very simple utility created with the single purpose of helping you scan your hard drives and detect if there are any sector errors, also known as the infamous “bad sectors” (sectors with physical damages).

Using Windows Surface Scanner is very easy as it is a very simple tool. Too simple, I’d say. Its interface comes with no additional settings or features, and this makes using it quite unintuitive and awkward. It’s a rare case when simplicity is taken to extreme and backfires, but it’s the case of Windows Surface Scanner too. After I finished a disk scan I was able only to print a report, but I would’ve preferred to be provided with additional statistics and clear data about the scan results, even if no bad sectors were found. Anyway, if bad blocks (sectors) are found, they will be displayed in the center of the interface. So if there are problems to care about, this tool will properly inform you about them. Since it’s also free, I’d say it’s worth a try. It represents a pretty good solution to check your disks for bad sectors.
