When a square is alive and has an extremely small number of or too many alive neighbors, it perishes in the next round. If it has precisely the right number of neighbors, it remains alive. If a dead square has exactly three alive neighbors, it comes to life. You commence with an initial pattern and observe it evolve as time passes. Sometimes the pattern remains unchanged, sometimes it repeats, and sometimes it moves around the grid. The game is all about witnessing how these simple rules give rise to interesting and often astonishing patterns as the game progresses.

1. Underpopulation: Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbors dies.

2. Survival: Any live cell with two or three live neighbors continues to the next generation.

3. Overpopulation: Any live cell with more than three live neighbors dies.

4. Reproduction: Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbors becomes a live cell.
