Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos is a role-playing title from Assemble Entertainment that takes you on an adventure through a series of dungeons, where you will have to eradicate monsters and keep the chaos from spilling out into your kingdom. It takes on a modern approach to your classic roguelike game titles.
Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos is a direct sequel to the critically-acclaimed ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery). It follows the same gameplay elements, however with more modern features, such as a 3D mode that allows you to better view the various locations available.
As previously mentioned, Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos is the second installment of the ADOM franchise, whose first game was released in 1994. With numerous years between their releases, there is definitely a great change in the visual elements, especially when it comes to the smoothness of the characters’ movements. You can also enjoy a large number of procedurally generated locations to explore.
Players have the option to choose from a wide range of classes, races, and allegiances. Each character build provides varying challenges that you need to overcome. In contrast to the first installment, the sequel introduces a stealth mode that allows you to move past enemies without having to engage in battle, in case your character isn’t properly equipped or leveled up.
Unfortunately, though, there are still numerous bugs that can greatly affect gameplay. Some equipment will disappear randomly, which can be quite frustrating especially when in the middle of a sudden battle. Attempting to interact with certain objects will also require repeated clicking. There are also issues that cause the game tofreeze and will require you to relaunch the program in order to move past wherever you last left off.
Overall, while Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos has great potential to surpass its predecessor, it’s currently too buggy to fully enjoy. Not only do you have to constantly deal with non-clickable elements that are meant to be interactive, but you also have to deal with constant freezing that keeps you from making significant progress. Battling enemies can also be a hassle as you never know when your weapon could disappear.
