Not all indie games look the same, which is one of the great things about indie development. However, even games which are simple graphically can surprise you. There’s even something special about simpler design that lends itself very well to horror games. ToyBox is basic in terms of graphics, but has an atmosphere and style that’s very memorable. ToyBox is very simple, it’s an FPS game with an ‘arcade-like’ feel and gem collection mechanic. You find yourself in a dark, stone maze with various environmental hazards. You must explore this labyrinth, taking care not to get lost, while finding gems. The tricky part is avoiding the creature in the maze with you, a very unpleasant-looking doll-like spider creature with a grimacing face! In fact, there are two to watch out for. While you may need to love indie games to enjoy this very basic creation, it has a very particular style and it can really make you jump out of your skin. It’s also very quick to get into, so you can pick up and play in moments. This game is still being developed, so expect new additions in future.
ToyBox is perfect if you like to be creeped out, because there’s something very weird about the creature, the maze itself and the sounds. Sometimes it gives you a jump scare, sometimes you just think there’s something after you and there isn’t. All that’s needed now is for the game to be fleshed out.
Incredibly fun and enjoyable game. It has a great sense of humor and the graphics are bright and colorful. The gameplay is fast and challenging, and the controls are easy to learn and use
