By disabling the Spotlight's indexing you don't stop the functions that Spotlight performs, including creating bootable backups or performance issues regarding the new Mac OS X installations.
Spotless is a utility designed to quickly enable and disable Spotlight's auto indexing with a single click. It works by changing the SPOTLIGHT flag in the hostconfig file from -YES- to -NO- or vice versa. After making the change, a restart is necessary to apply the changes.
