SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a monitoring system that's embedded in hard disk drives and solid-state drives and identifies potential hardware failures. Still, you need to install a specialized utility to reveal the information that's being collected by the SMART system. One example comes from the Volitans Software company.
As soon as you launch SMART Utility on your Mac, it starts scanning your system for information. In just a few moments you will find out if you need to start backing up your data or your HDD/SSD works perfectly.
The application displays a list with the available partitions, drive model and serial number, current temperature, number of pending bad sectors, and many others. It also gives you access to additional information if you click the "More Info" and "Show More" buttons from the main screen. On the bottom side of the interface you'll see the overall SMART status (in my case, it was "Failure" so I made sure I backed up my data).
Still, you'll need to consult with a specialized computer technician if the offered information doesn't ring any bells or the app displays the "Failure" SMART status.
Either way, it's always a good idea to back up your data and check how your Mac is behaving to prevent losing any of your important files and apps. So, buying and installing this application on your Mac to find out the SMART status of your drives is a fine choice.
