Pyreadline is an extension for Python created by Gary Bishop. Basically, a readline is an editor that uses commands and key combinations in order to execute different functions or commands. Pyreadline is an extension for Python, based on the old UNC Readline. In fact, pyreadline is the next evolution of that software. Pyreadline is based on ctypes, which is in fact the interface that allows the execution of foreign functions in Python. By using ctypes, pyreadline becomes cross platform, as it can be used in Windows, Windows CE, Mac and Unix distributions. Pyreadline has one really great thing: the international character support. This allows developers from different regions to create tools using the readline, because it allows characters to be used in different systems/languages. Pyreadline is maintained by the ipy team, therefore, it can be used with iPython. The package is easy to install and use. However, lack of official support guide or tutorials does not allow beginners to try their hand on it. Still, it is a good extension to use in Python.
