PSPP is a free statistical tool for the analysis of sampled data. It has been thought as a replacement for SPSS, a powerful statistical package with the downside of being costly. Additionally, it has the advantage of running on different platforms. Good news is that it comes with a detailed and fully indexed manual, in which you can find answers to most of your questions related to the use of the app.
It is good that its interface has been designed to allow a fluent transition from SPSS, which means that you will probably have no difficulty to start using PSPP right away, provided you have used other statistical packages before.
The application is mainly intended to perform descriptive statistics. In this respect, it supports performing T-tests, Anova, linear and logistic regression, measures of association, non-parametric tests, cluster analysis, reliability and factor analysis, among others. However, it does not seem to allow advanced models, missing values analysis or complex surveys.
It was created on C and uses GNU scientific libraries for its mathematical routines and plotutils for graph generation. In this regard, the tool can process large quantities of data (over 1 billion cases and over 1 billion variables) quite efficiently and accurately.
PSPP supports all major data-entry formats and methods. Fortunately, it lets you open and process various datasets simultaneously. Moreover, you can readily merge, join or concatenate them. Once the work is done, the tool lets you save the results of your analyses in ASCII, PDF, PostScript and HTML.
All in all, I am sure PSPP will be very welcomed by not only statisticians but also researchers and students who need to analyze sampled data. Luckily, the product is absolutely free and there are no additional costs.
