MilkyTracker is intended to create and edit soundtracks for games. In this respect, the application supports working with module files, specifically MOD and XM. Besides, it can also import and export in WAV format.
I understand the app’s interface is deeply inspired by the once-popular tool Fasttracker II; however, you would probably agree that it looks extremely outdated and does not look friendly at all. In this regard, a solution could be to design two different interface modes and let the users decide which one they prefer. On top of that, the link to help is broken which makes the tool even more intimidating if you have never used a similar application. Luckily, the installer package comes with various sample tracks.
Most of the operations can be done from the main window, which has a myriad of buttons and controls in the upper part as well as a panel in which there is a visual representation of the sound waves. Similarly, there are also two smaller panels where you can see a list of the imported sample files as well as the instruments. Good news is that you can open and play up to 32 modules at the same time using different tabs.
It is good there are various built-in editors you can use for editing the whole track as well as individual instruments. The instrument editor comes with multiple convenient features, such as envelope zooming and scaling. Likewise, it lets you copy and swap instruments and samples across tabs.
In general, MilkyTracker is mainly for those who miss the “old good days”. Still, it has most of what it takes to compose excellent audio soundtracks for video games and clips. Fortunately, the product is opensource; donations are encouraged, though.
