MEDIEVAL: Total War - Gold Edition is not one of the best-loved Total War games because it is an earlier version and doesn’t have very good graphics. In addition, the sea and sailing setup is also frustrating. However, Medieval Total War is a great game on its own, it is just the victim of Total War fans because it is easier to criticize than most of the other Total War games.
You do not have to choose a Total War game to love, you can simply enjoy them all equally. MEDIEVAL: Total War - Gold Edition had numerous qualities, some of which were lost in other games. Specifically, it made having a family very easy, it gave you an incentive to keep or kill your generals, and it made improving your generals very easy. For example, you may give your generals titles to lands and you may give them qualifications. You may also control them in battle to determine which human qualities they took on, including the ability to slaughter the enemies you capture in the battlefield. The graphics are pretty poor on both the campaign map and during real-time fights, but they are far better than the first Shogun game, and don’t forget that Medieval was one of the early games.
You do not have to become polarized like some other Total War fans are. Sticking to just one version of the game is silly. There is no reason why you shouldn’t play MEDIEVAL: Total War - Gold Edition and then Medieval 2, Shogun 2, Total War Rome and so on. You cannot go wrong no matter which you pick, with the exception of Empire Total War because it is terrible. Medieval Total War also features the Viking invasion, which allows you to play a very small map featuring the United Kingdom.
