Lost Sphear is a traditional JRPG and the second release from new studio Tokyo RPG Factory. Explore a mysterious world filled with time changing powers, villainous military organisations and a diverse group of team mates.
Created as a new development team by veteran studio Square Enix, Tokyo RPG Factory has an explicit focus on releasing JRPGs heavily inspired by such fan favourites as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. After a mediocre first release, Lost Sphear is the second game under the brand and unfortunately suffers many of the same problems. Lost Sphear's story revolves around a young man who finds the power to restore lost memories, a group serving as basic antagonists and seemingly endless item-based side quests. The focus on genre-stable plot devices make for an experience which feels both derivative and stale. A battle system, stronger than the story element, also attempts to cram in the most JRPG standards possible, resulting in a confusing and pointless mess of abilities. While these negatives may actually be selling points for RPG addicts, Lost Sphear still feels lacklustre.
Lost Sphear is a game sold on nostalgia. Some may be able to hold onto their rose coloured glasses long enough to wade through, but they won't be the majority.
