High fantasy adventure in a turn-based setup

Heroes of Might & Magic V is a premium strategy game from Nival and Ubisoft, continuing the long-running Might and Magic franchise. As demons spread chaos across the land of Ashan, you take control of heroes as you serve various factions and build armies to fight against the forces of evil.

Originally released in 2006, Heroes of Might & Magic V marked a turning point in the franchise. Aside from boasting the best graphics at the time, it also rebooted the franchise to take it in a new direction. Check out Might and Magic Heroes VI and Might & Magic Heroes VII.

A complex, layered strategy game

Playable characters in Heroes of Might & Magic V are the titular heroes. They can learn new skills or upgrade their existing ones after achieving a certain amount of experience. Skills also vary depending on the hero’s faction. Haven is populated by humans, while Inferno is the kingdom of demons. You also have the Necropolis, Dungeon, Sylvan, and the Academy factions to learn and explore.

Like other entries in the franchise, it follows a turn-based strategy setup. Heroes move around the map and take turns executing actions, from casting spells to using items in your inventory. When not in combat, you explore a massive fantasy world. While the graphics appear dated by modern standards, it was considered revolutionary at the time of its release. Lastly, multiple side-quests add more to your experience.

Like most Might & Magic titles, this game can be challenging for newcomers to the genre. The variety of skills, plus the logistics for moving entire armies, create a steep learning curve. However, given the game’s age, the online multiplayer services are no longer available. Players can no longer go on co-op campaigns. Still, you can enjoy it as a single-player experience.

An important part of the Might & Magic franchise

Heroes of Might & Magic V offers a complex, layered strategy experience with diverse factions and a challenging learning curve. Despite dated graphics and discontinued online multiplayer services, the game remains engaging for single-player campaigns. The turn-based mechanics and extensive fantasy world exploration provide depth, while side quests enhance the overall experience. It’s a rewarding choice for fans of the genre seeking a nostalgic, yet enriching, gameplay experience.
