File Identifier 1.0

File Identifier is a Mac utility designed for Mac users who have some troubles opening documents on their computers. One of the reasons why you might fail to launch documents is that they lack file extensions. With File Identifier your OS immediately identifies and reveals the extensions of the files.

The app doesn't require an integrated help guide but features a very user-friendly interface. On the main window you can find the place where to drag-and-drop the file you wish to analyze (you can also go to File and choose the file you need to analyze).

In my testing, I've selected a RTF document from a local directory (I erased the file extension before importing it). The app quickly displayed the correct extension of the file.

In my opinion, however, this program supports a small amount of file extensions. It can identify only formats like .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx, .pdf, .rtf, .jpg, .tiff, and .gif. Hence, popular formats like .txt, .bmp or .html are not supported.

By making an online search with the following keywords "identify file format" you can find websites where you can import files with missing extensions and get the accurate answers you need. Hence, I don't think it's worth installing File Identifier specifically for revealing the info that you can find online, but the program is free and it's up to you to decide whether you want to try it out or not.
