File Helper is an efficient tool for locating all those so-called unassociated files in your system - files that do not have an existing tool associated to their extension. It invites you to start a scan of your system in order to locate the files with extensions that will not allow you to open them directly. When the unassociated file types are found, you will get an explanatory note saying what each specific file type is all about.
You can set your own preferences in the opening screen - set the program to launch itself on startup, and to continue scanning files in the background while resting in the system tray. File Helper comes with a nicely designed and pleasing interface.
The whole thing is automatic, and does not require too much input from your side – it is not that there are many controls that you can tweak, either. Results are impressive, though: whether it finds all of the dangling files or not, may take some time to find out, but the list of files found will most likely turn out very extensive. After that, the program will offer you the possibility to download the software tool or application required to open and run those "orphaned" files.
