The simplest way of editing an audio file is to look at it as a waveform, so you can detect at a glance every track (if more than one), every volume variation, every artifact and speckle noise, etc. DJ Audio Editor opens in a graphical interface where the waveform of your audio track can take up nearly all the space available. This will help you edit and enhance your files with a long list of audio effects in the most intuitive way.

DJ Audio Editor may not be as comprehensive as other professional sound editors out there, but it is certainly much easier to use than many of its competitors. The list of audio effects available, as well as the number of audio formats supported (MP3, WAV, Ogg, M4A, AIFF, FLAC, AC3, etc.) are surely the envy of many similar tools. Besides, it offers you a tag editor to document and catalog properly your music collection.

When it comes to audio editing, all the usual suspects are there – cutting, trimming, merging, appending, splitting, and of course mixing audio – hence the “DJ” in the program’s name (wink) – are all done easily and intuitively thanks to the program’s waveform-based interface. As for the list of audio effects and filters available – one of the strong points of this tool – the list of 25+ items include echo, reverb, vibrato, flanger, reverse, tempo/pitch/rate change, volume normalization, fade in/out, equalization, etc. If you find this list to be not as extensive as you would like it to be, you can always add to it as many VST plug-ins as you wish.

You can use DJ Audio Editor also to extract audio streams from video files and to rip audio tracks from your CD collection and convert and tag all the extracted files in the process. You can also record new audio using an external microphone or make recordings of any audio playing on your computer, such as radio programs or music videos.

Last but not least, I would like to highlight a feature you don’t come across with very often when reviewing audio tools – a text-to-speech converter. You just have to paste any text into the box provided and the program will convert it into narrated audio for you to listen or to save and edit in any way you like, just like any other of your audio files. If only for this nice add-on to the program’s already comprehensive functionality, this is certainly a tool worth trying.
