There are multiple document formats out there and converting between them is quite a frequent operation. It is in these cases when a tool like Convert Doc may come in handy, as it supports various common formats, like PDF, DOC, TXT, RTF, and HTML. Actually, the program can be used in two modes, of which conversion is one. The other mode is intended for special document processing. It is a shame that the program’s interface may look too technical for the common user. In general, it is difficult to find your way as there are probably too many buttons and controls.
When set in conversion mode, the tool lets you process batches of documents, which you can import one by one or as a complete folder. Although specifying a specific page range to convert, it only works for a set of continuous pages. This means you cannot make a selection such as “1, 3, 5-8”, something possible in other document converters. Luckily, you are allowed to open password-protected documents if it is necessary. Likewise, it lets you decide what to do with the contents of a scanned document to which OCR processing has been applied. However, you should know that the program does not support actual OCR.
As for special processing, the program can perform various simple editing procedures. These include appending and concatenating various documents, removing empty lines as well as searching and replacing a given string from the source.
All in all, Convert Doc works just as described by its developer. However, most modern office suites can help you convert between document formats without the need of a third-party tool. In this respect, this product has the advantage of supporting batch conversion. Likewise, it can be used directly from the command line. These two features combined are essential for automating document conversion tasks. Luckily, the product is shareware but can be tried for free.
