Ciao Italian Dictionary is a practical Italian dictionary which was developed to be used alongside with $9.99 Ciao Italian Course. It is now being offered for free and it can be really helpful for anyone studying Italian. This dictionary focuses on five hundred words that are thought to be used the most during the first years of speaking Italian. It is by no means a complete dictionary.
The application consists of a single window, where the five hundred words are listed in alphabetical order in English, but you can sort them that way in Italian as well. Each word has a translation next to it, and on the right side of the screen, there is a button for each word that will play its Italian pronunciation. These audio files play instantly when you click the button. The recordings are very clear and they seem well pronounced.
You will notice a small button in the top-right corner of the screen. When clicked, it will show an alphabet, which makes it easier to find specific words.
Unfortunately, a search feature is missing, and that is a must in any modern dictionaries. It is true that five hundred words is not a lot, but you do lose time scrolling up and down to find a word.
