Bloodborne Kart is a free-to-play racing game from Lilith Walther, Corwyn Prichard, and Evelyn Lark. This is an indie project that aims to recreate the PS4-exclusive souls game, Bloodborne, serving as an unofficial spinoff and demake. Capturing the visual quality and sensibilities of the original PlayStation, this lets you drive one of many racing karts inspired by the classic FromSoftware game.
Low poly models and low-resolution graphics are some of the signature features of Bloodborne Kart, aside from the gothic theme and iconic characters from the world of Yharnam. Also, check out Beach Buggy Racing and Bloodborne PSX.
Bloodborne Kart is a community-driven project that aims to create the immersive story and top-tier graphics of the original FromSoft game into a PS1/ PSX racing game in the vein of Crash Team Racing. As such, its race tracks are based around various locations in the city of Yharnam, a Gothic-themed city where the current iteration is built above the old one.
As a racing game, it supports a full campaign for single-player mode. It also comes with a split-screen multiplayer mode that captures the old-school feels. Other than these two racing-focused game sessions, you can also fight against each other through a versus battle mode, similar to the Twisted Metal games. The game features low-poly models and low-resolution visuals, further capturing the PSX vibes of the game.
Of course, the treatment of the Bloodborne IPs won’t be universally acclaimed as the original, although it offers a fun spin on the game. The graphics are admittedly dated, and it doesn’t come with online multiplayer mode. Additionally, it doesn’t make use of the FromSoft title’s lore. It focuses on capturing the world and the characters. Still, the Easter eggs and references scattered throughout make it additionally enjoyable.
To put it simply, Bloodborne Kart is a love letter to both the FromSoftware hit game and fans of retro games from old gaming consoles. While its graphics are dated by modern standards, it definitely achieves its objective: to bring a Bloodborne experience in the PSX kart racing format. The designs translate well to create an authentic feel, despite it being intentionally outdated in terms of technology.
