Bejeweled is the classic among gem-matching puzzle games. Created by PopCap games in 2001 it presented itself in such an appealing form that it launched a wave of imitators and made PopCap one of the biggest names in casual gaming. Its simple colour-matching gameplay and bright colourful graphics have ensnared a generation of players. In its simplest form you can play the game in both the normal untimed mode and a faster-paced time trial mode.
The basic gameplay of Bejeweled is very simple: you have a board full of gems of various colours. In each move you can swap the position of two gems. If the change results in three or more gems of the same colour being in a row they disappear you earn points and more gems drop in to fill the gap. Good swaps can lead to long cascades of scoring gems. As you score gems a bar at the bottom of the screen will fill up when it's completely full the round is over. If you run out of legal moves to make the game ends. In time trial mode the game works in much the same way but the bar also decreases over time. If it reaches the bottom the game ends.
