It is known as "3 of 9 code".
Every Code 39 character has five barcode and four spaces, making a total of 9 elements. Of these nine elements, three are wide and six are narrow making Code 39 a two width code.
Code 39 symbol begins and ends with an "*" asterik character, which is this barcodes start and stop code.
Although there are only 43 characters in Code 39s character set, it is possible to encode all 128 ASCII characters using Code 39 Full ASCII feature. If a barcode reader is set to FULL ASCII mode then special symbols are used to encode characters such as lowercase letters.
An optional modulo 43 check character can be used for specific applications that require data security. The Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC) use the check character for health care applications.
