MKVTools is a set of utilities intended for video editing and converting, specifically made to manage AVI files. Although the purpose of the tool is to convert various types of video formats, such as MKV, MP4, and OGM, into AVI files playable on DiVX DVD players, it also supports other target devices.

In my opinion, this tool’s interface is its weakest point, probably because it does not follow the conventions established for this type of tool. Therefore, it is likely that you will need some time to figure out how the program works. It has two tabs, named AVI Recorder and AVI Builder, which correspond to its two main functions.

As with other similar programs, AVITools supports importing and processing batches. Moreover, in case the source files contain multiple tracks of video, audio or subtitles, it is allowed to select those you want to keep in the resulting movie. You can also import still images (BMP) to convert them into a sort of a slideshow. As for subtitles, it is even possible to import them from external files. Fortunately, you can also preview the contents before deciding. The tool supports just a few editing features; still, they may be enough to meet the most basic needs. These include splitting and trimming clips as well as joining various of them.

In Recorder mode, the program allows capturing the whole screen or just part of it. In addition, you can set various recording parameters, such as frame time, and use a background color. Moreover, you need to choose an output folder and give a name to the resulting file.

All in all, AVITools works stably and produces excellent results. Yet, it has various drawbacks, like few editing features, no effects and a difficult-to-use interface. Moreover, it is kind of restricted in terms of supported formats. Yet, it may be what you are looking for.
