Creates animations with custom meshes that can bend, shape and twist. The Realistic Motion Blur feature aids in controlling the number of frames and blend. Smart Bones is another feature that reduces or entirely removes distortion around your character's joints.
Anime Studio Pro is a product with a long history and a reputation to accompany it. It is a 2D vector based animation program created over a decade ago which since then has gone through a lot of changes and upgrades. Current version includes all the right features, such as physics emulation, 3D model support and creation, a Character Wizard for design editing and many more.
One of the most welcomed aspects of this program is that it is compatible with Photoshop, having a layered import process. There's also a Smart Bone system which shortens the animation creation process, reducing both time and frustration. Editable Motion Graphs make the resulting animation smoother and more precise. I should also mention that the earlier versions of Anime Studio Pro were the first to include support for Poser and Wacom tablets.
The most appealing aspect of this suite is that it can actually let people make animation that looks professional. Not every tool lets you actually be good at what you do, but Anime Studio Pro has all the right things. The interface, which is being updated and perfected with each new version, makes it easy to do a good job and access even the most advanced and special processes that make great animation.
Anime Studio Pro is not cheap and, despite the great job the developers do on the interface, can be quite difficult to master properly, but if you want to create animation, this is the right tool.

Revolutionary Smart Bones
- Smart Bones is an incredible feature that reduces or entirely removes distortion around your character's joints - specifically around knees and elbows. Group a set of points and use the Smart Bones control levers to create 3D looking motion that you can easily repeat with the turn of a dial. For example with Smart Bones you can control facial expressions and head-turning on a character with simple dial movements instead of having to touch each bone point. Smart Bones not only steps up the quality and realism of the bone actions, but makes it much easier to repeat complex movements and control your rigged elements. You can control Switch layers, Layer order, Layer visibility, Follow path, Flip layer horizontally/vertically, Stroke exposure, Shape effect positioning, Shape effect parameters (like gradient colors), 3D thickness of vector shapes that have been converted to 3D and even more smart bones controls.
Depth Shifting
- When moving an object forward and back in Z, Depth Shifting is an option to preserve its apparent size. Anime Studio Pro 9.5 does this by automatically applying the proper amount of scale. This can be used to arrange landscapes, for example placing mountains far away without forcing them to become tiny.
Media foundation
- The 64-bit Windows version of Anime Studio Pro 9.5 will now use Media Foundation. It is no longer necessary to install QuickTime to import popular audio and video formats like MP3, AAC, MP4, and QuickTime. When exporting animations on Windows 7 and higher, the application can create movies using the Windows Media Foundation media library. When exporting animations on Windows XP and higher, the application can create movies using the DirectShow media library.
Bone-Rigging System
- Bone-rigging is a fast and efficient alternative to tedious frame-by-frame animation. Add a skeleton to any image by pointing and clicking to create bones that overlay the parts of your image, to control arms or legs for example. Then bring your image to life by moving any individual bone point to create the pose or motion you want, while keeping your project organized with the sequencer and timeline. UPDATE to bones now allows you to add labels and assign colors to bones. The keyframes for colored bones show up in the timeline in special colored channels to match.
Nested Layer Controls
- Up until 9.5, bones could only control their direct children. Now, bones can control the children of their children. If you have a group inside a bone layer and then vector layers inside that group, the bone layer can manipulate the artwork in those vector layers if nested layer control is turned on. This allows for more powerful rigging options, while simultaneously simplifying and allow more organization in the layer hierarchy.
Flexi-Binding
- Flexi-Binding allows you to isolate the influence of a set of bones from the rest of the skeleton. For example, only the right arm bones should affect the artwork for the right arm. This lessens (or eliminates) the need to separate artwork on frame zero, and then put it back together again with the Offset Bone tool. This is a great new feature for images and vectors.
Styles Improvement
- Improvements to Styles now allow you to see real-time changes to shape's fill color, stroke color, brush settings, etc. on the canvas so you can see exactly what effect your changes will have.
Update to Eye Dropper
- The updated and improved Eyedropper has options to just select fill color or stroke color, or copy a color to the clipboard.
Enhancements to Switch Layers
- Improvements to switch layer behavior will allow them to work better for frame-by-frame animation.
Switch Layer Keyframes Match Layer Colors
If the children of a switch layer have layer colors assigned, then when those children are active, the corresponding keys in the timeline will have the same color. This makes it easier to see what switch layer is active at what time with a quick glance.
Easy Control Over Switch Layers
To change a switch layers active child, you can now simply Alt Cmd right click on it in the workspace. No need to select it in the Layers palette.
