Survival horror games are constantly popular and numerous yet rarely innovating. Among the Sleep is a completely unique horror game with a twist - it is played from the perspective of a two-year-old toddler. It's dark unsettling and genuinely creepy perhaps how a toddler really sees the dark of nighttime.
Among the Sleep is ultimately a first-person exploration game. Taking control of a toddler who can crawl or briefly walk around his environment the player is also accompanied by a friendly talking teddy bear. When the surreal settings become darker hugging teddy can light the way for a short period of time. Throughout the adventure the player is pursued by two unknown characters - a creepy lullaby-singing lady and a shadowy figure wearing a trenchcoat. There is no way to beat these enemies the aim is to simply survive and find the way home to the toddler's troubled mother.
As a horror adventure Among the Sleep is unsettling and vivdly tense. The concept and the settings are strangely beautiful yet overbearingly frightening. The story is troubling and heartbreaking and while playing the part of a two-year-old it really does feel like the only light in the world comes from Teddy. A multiple award winning game that totally innovates.
