4Videosoft MP4 Video Converter for Mac is a very complete conversion tool. The name of the app seems to suggest that it can only convert files to the MP4 format, but that isn't the case. This app lets you open almost any popular video file, and it does let you convert files to H.264 and MPEG-4, using the MP4 container, but its output format support doesn't end there. Other popular formats like TS, WMV, MOV, AVI and FLV are also supported. The application comes with a great number of conversion profiles. These are preconfigured conversion settings for specific multimedia playback devices. Some of the available profiles are for the Xbox 360, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, PSP, and Playstation 3.
A video editor comes packaged with this converter. It can be used for basic video editing tasks like adjusting brightness, contrast and saturation, and trimming and cropping videos. Watermarks are also supported.
Those users who own home theater setups will also be glad to know that this converter lets you process 5.1 audio. If your source file has a 5.1 audio track, your converted file will keep the 6 audio channels. This is a relatively new feature in video converters and I am glad it is being implemented. I wish developers would work a little harder to support subtitle tracks on MKV files, though.
In my testing, I converted an MKV file of about a minute in length into an H.264 file for an AppleTV. The process wasn't slow. The whole thing took less than a minute. The resulting file looked and sounded fine.
